Today Hounslow is the principal town in the London Borough of Hounslow, some 17 kilometres from Charing Cross, but back in the early-1700s it was in Middlesex.  One of the first recorded meetings took place on Hounslow Heath was from Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th June 1732 when the results were recorded in John Cheny's Historical List. Two decades later, in 1751, a 3 day meeting was held from Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th July. On the first day the £50 Purse was won by John Robinson’s True Blue, beating Puss and Wheasel owned by Anthony Langley-Swymmer. The meeting was extended to a 4 day meeting in 1752 and a year later they held a 3 day race meeting in August 1753 when the popular Give and Take Handicap had a large number of subscribers and was won by Mr Rogers’s Robin Red Breast, defeating Fen Folly and Sampson Gideon. The meeting continued to grow in success and in 1754 a further 4 day meeting was held between 21st October and 24th October, followed by a 3 day meeting in July 1755. Racing lapsed in the town for a while, although a Military meeting took place on Thursday 15th April 1819 when the Hunters Sweepstakes saw Captain Hammersley’s Billy Button beat Buffer and Chevalier. The next year a 2 day event was staged on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th September 1820 offering a Silver Cup race for which entries had to be made at the Marquis of Granby. Celebrations extended beyond the racing with an Ordinary at the George Inn on Monday and the Rose and Crown on Tuesday. Although meetings continued after this date, the cards often included pony races or events for half-breds.
